How is coaching different than Therapy?
Therapy takes people from dysfunctional to functional. Coaching takes people from functioning to optimal. In fact, many who are seeing a therapist might benefit from also working with a coach. Both coaching and therapy use the client's past in healing. Therapy uses the past to find out why and how the client might be experiencing a particular situation in their life. Coaching only deals with the past in regards to helping a client move forward on a specific area. People who find they are suffering from severe depression, addictions, mental disorders and/or suicidal thoughts should first work with a licensed mental health specialist. Once a therapeutic relationship has been established, some find coaching a great addition to their healing. Coaching is not meant to take the place of therapy for individuals who need those services. Though I am a certified empowerment life coach, I AM NOT A LICENSED THERAPIST NOR DO I PROVIDE THERAPEUTIC COUNSELING.
